Je La Ramène! - European Week for Waste Reduction

16 - 24 November 2013

Zero Waste Brussels' inaugural campaign launches on the first Monday of the European Week for Waste Reduction, 18th November 2013.

As the theme for this year's edition of the European Week is Reuse, we decided to focus on an area where reuse can have a big future - Brussels' outdoor markets. Although much produce is sold loose by weight, most deli goods are placed in single use plastic tubs that are non-recyclable in Brussels.

We're giving stallholders bright orange stickers to tell customers that they can reuse these containers - carefully washed, they can be brought back to the market and refilled. Stallholders are happy with the reduced cost to them, customers can avoid another non-recyclable going into the white bag, everyone can feel pretty smug (hence the name 'Je la ramène' - blowing your own trumpet!).

In the long term we'd like to see the end of these plastic tubs. Tupperware is sturdier, longer-lasting and easier to clean... why not take a couple on your next trip to the market and get your feta, olives, pesto and pistachios in a zero waste way?
